Instructions for After Your Dental Implant Procedure

It’s important to follow our instructions after you undergo a dental implant procedure. Bluebonnet Oral Surgery and Implants is here for you and wants to ensure everything goes well after you visit us for dental implants.

Gauze Dressing

  • Apply gentle pressure to the surgical site by biting on gauze; check and replace as needed.
  • Keep partial/denture out until the post-op appointment, approximately one week after implant placement.


  • Normal slow oozing for the first 24 hours; reddish saliva is expected.
  • Excessive bleeding requires contacting our office.
  • Swelling and bruising are common and usually not a complication.
  • Sutures will be removed at the post-op appointment.


  • Take pain medication within the first hour; some may cause drowsiness.
  • Avoid alcohol, driving, or operating machinery until the effects are known.


  • Apply ice packs to the implant’s side for 15 minutes on and 15 minutes off on the surgery day to reduce swelling.

Mouth Hygiene

  • Rinse with warm salt water several times a day.
  • Wipe the implant area with wet gauze or a Q-tip to keep it clean.
  • Avoid brushing the implant area for the first week; brush other teeth regularly.


  • Avoid hard, crunchy items and chewing on the implant site.


  • I.V. sedation patients should refrain from driving for 24 hours.
  • Take medications after meals to prevent nausea.

General Advice

  • Avoid pressure on the implants: This includes wearing dental appliances and eating on the implant side.
  • Maintain excellent hygiene.
