Sinus Lift Procedures for Dental Implants
Our dental office in San Antonio, TX, specializes in providing advanced sinus lift procedures for dental implants. Sinus lift, also known as sinus augmentation, is a surgical technique that helps create additional space in the upper jaw by lifting the sinus membrane. This procedure is essential when there is insufficient bone height in the back of the upper jaw to support dental implants. With our expert team and state-of-the-art facilities, we are dedicated to ensuring successful dental implant placements through meticulous sinus lift procedures. Whether you’re considering dental implants or need a consultation, Bluebonnet Oral Surgery and Implants is here to provide the highest quality care and help you achieve a healthy and confident smile.
What Is a Sinus Lift?
The maxillary sinuses are located posterior to the cheeks and above the upper teeth, constituting empty spaces filled with air. Some of the roots from the upper natural teeth reach into these sinuses. Following the extraction of these upper teeth, a delicate bone wall typically separates the maxillary sinus from the oral cavity. Successful placement of dental implants relies on an adequate amount of supporting bone. However, in cases where the sinus wall is exceptionally thin, it becomes impractical to install dental implants in this bone.
Sinus Lifts to Aid With Dental Implants
The critical factor for a successful and enduring dental implant lies in the quality and quantity of the jawbone to which the implant will be affixed. In cases where bone loss has occurred due to injury or periodontal disease, a sinus augmentation becomes crucial to elevate the sinus floor and facilitate the development of new bone. Among the most prevalent bone grafting procedures for individuals experiencing bone loss in the upper jaw is a sinus lift. This procedure aims to stimulate bone growth in the floor of the maxillary sinus, situated above the bony ridge of the gum line that provides support for the upper teeth. By fortifying and promoting bone growth in this area, it becomes possible to securely place dental implants in the newly formed bone.
Am I a Candidate for a Sinus Lift?
You might be a candidate for a sinus lift if you:
- Have multiple missing teeth in the rear of your jaw.
- Experience a substantial loss of bone in the back of your jaw.
- Have missing teeth due to a congenital defect or condition.
- Lack most of the maxillary teeth but need support for dental implants.
How Are Sinus Lifts Performed?
During a sinus augmentation procedure, a small incision is made in the premolar or molar region, exposing the jawbone. The sinus membrane is then lifted, and the space is filled with bone graft material. After a few months of healing and integration, dental implants can be inserted and stabilized in the new sinus bone. If there is enough existing bone, the sinus augmentation and implant placement can occur in a single procedure. If additional bone is needed, the sinus augmentation is performed first, followed by the implant placement after the graft has matured over several months. This effective procedure offers patients an alternative to traditional dentures, and it is typically conducted in our office under IV sedation and local anesthesia.
